Terrible book. I can’t believe I had to buy this for a class. I’m not sure who I should be more angry with the person that wrote it, the person that thought it would be a good idea to publish it, or my instructor for deciding he should teach from it (even though he admits that he doesn’t like it either and wants to fInd an alternative).Many of the problems at the end of the chapters aren’t even relevant to what you read about in the chapters. Many of the chapters have the same exact questions.Th authors try to over simply topics from clasical physics on wave mechanics and propagation to the extent that he’d be better off plagiarizing a high school physics book because there is very little explanation of what is being discussed but you have these formulas discussed in the chapters and there are virtually no usable example problems. I mean it’s confounding that a book like this is published and we have to pay this much money for a poorly written piece of garbage. Anyone reading this review that is buying this book because it’s required should raise hell with their department chairs.

This book is a beast, its definably not for the average IT major, more of the cable guy or electric engineer!!

It is usefull to use for the class, but sometime I find it too theoretic.By the way, It's not easy to get the instructor's materials from Stallings' website.

Didn't actually read it, just was required for class. Book goes into a ton of detail, not sure how much is relevant

This is a paperback. Its almost exactly what the teacher ordered, but weirdly the practice questions are not the same as the teacher's hard cover book. The rest of the content matches though.

Stallings has been a great writer on many communications topics but this book falls far by the wayside. As a personal note, he and I graduated with PhDs from MIT the same time and the same Course, but I did not know him. I have used his previous books with great success to get up to speed in many areas. This one, however, is way off the mark. First this is almost a rewrite at best of the 2nd Edition.It fails to discuss 3G and has barely a mention of 4G. Given the dominance of wireless Internet/IP access I would have expected some detailed discussion at the very least. Second, and this is a significant drawback, and a Publisher problem, this is a paperback edition and the pages are so flimsy as to be unusable. The print is almost unreadable. Thus, between the failure to come up to date and the poor quality of production, I would strongly suggest seeking alternatives, even the 2nd Edition. It is a shame, since Stallings has produced many gems in the past.

Content-wise, it is full of information and it provides helpful informative diagrams. The writing style is very technical and to the point. The end of chapter questions are split into two groups, review questions (to recall what was read) and problem questions (to use analytical thinking). Physically, the book cover and pages are very thin, making it a reasonably compact book to carry.

Don't buy this book if you can help yourself.The beginning part of this message was written on 9/10/2016. I'll keep updating this interview if necessary. This book has really pissed me off.There is a giant mistake just in the beginning of the book:On page 15, it says that "There is a direct relationship between the information-carrying capacity of a signal and its bandwidth: The greater the band width, the higher the information-carrying capacity." Then it gives three examples to show the relationship.What is ridiculous is, in all the three cases (Cases I, II, and III, pages 15-17), the information-carrying capacity totally has nothing to do with the bandwidth, but only depends on the fundamental frequency (f) of the carrier wave.How can an author make such a basic, serious mistake is beyond me.Furthermore, it doesn't explain why the frequencies of the harmonics have to be the odd multiples of the fundamental frequency (f). -- I know why, but many other students don't, and the professor didn't explain it either even a student asked. She just said, "To make it a square wave, the frequencies of the harmonics have to be the odd multiples of the fundamental frequency (f)." And she didn't say "why." I wanted to explain, but I just didn't want to "show off."Anyway, it's not a good book. I had to get it only because it was required for my class.Today (9/15/2016) I found more mistakes in the book. On pages 95-97, about the ground wave, sky wave, and line-of-sight wave, the text says they are of "up to about 3 MHz," "3-30 MHz," and "above 30 MHz" respectively, while the numbers on Figure 5.1 says "below 2 MHz," "2-30 MHz," and "above 30 MHz."Also today (9/15/2016), Example 5.1 on page 101, in the text the satellite is 35,863 km from earth, but in calculation, the number becomes 35.853×1000,000 -- You see? The last three digits of the two are not the same: one is "863," and the other "853."How can a person make so many mistakes in a textbook? And this is just the beginning.The book is trash.

I am reading this book now. It is simply amazing. It is a spiritual journey unto itself. The book is written in such a way that you feel like you have experienced the birth and death of the first three worlds. The print in the book is extremely small though so it makes it tough to read a lot at once. If you use reading glasses your probably going to have a hard time with it. I have the small paperback version. I don't know if larger print versions exist. You can probably download it for kindle though. Even suffering through the small print, what is being presented here is priceless and well worth the effort.

I once had the great opportunity to interview Frank Waters in his home. Wise beyond his many years at the time, it was great to converse with a man that was so respected among the clans, both of the HOPI and the Pueblo. The book was based mainly on the word of one HOPI. While the book is well documented, and thorough....you need to read The Fourth World of the HOPIs to color in all of the history. No movies on this...so you have to use your reading imagination to see the great panorama of the history.Remember, the Kachinas were leading the HOPI around the great lands of the Americas and the SAME time that Moses was leading his tribes. Open your mind to a new world of history.

An incredibly detailed history of the Hopi Indians & their legends from the beginning of time. The book is meant to be read carefully in order to absorb the story told within. Only those with an appreciation of native peoples & their cultures should attenpt to read it, as casual readers might get bored. The last few chapters made me want to cry, as they detailed the incredible abuse suffered by the Hopi from the US Govt. A freaking SHAME!

I am of Mayan descent and I have been looking for my ancient origins. This book was a huge revelation of my ancestry and answered so many questions of where my people came from. Very interesting read for sure.

This book totally rooted me in my Native Land. I feel not only more versed in it's spiritual heritage now. The patterns of western spiritual traditions align perfectly in their origins with Native practices. The stories are complex and imaginative as the Bible. Essential reading for shamanic research and insight into the Laurasian tradition--though it may seem unexpected for some people. I'm glad it was written despite the breaking of tradition in it's creation and sharing with outsiders.

The only thing wrong is its in tiny print. Not small, but tiny.

I live in the desert southwest, and i know Hopi and Zuni people. i have spoken with them about this book and they tell me my information is accurate. this is a wonderful resource if you wish to understand this people and who they are. it isn't the end all beat all, as no book could possibly be that for any people, but is a great reference for any one wanting to know why they believe what they believe, and a great reference for me because i now know who these people are where they came from and what there mission is, even if many of them do not.

In the beginning Taiowa created his Nephew to lay out the the universes in proper order. And so begins Frank Waters' book of the Hopi.Fully a third of the book is dedicated to telling the lore of this tribe, and through the saga you learn of a tradition that explains why this small group of people have been living in the same area for a millenia. As Waters moves to discussing recorded history and the shameful exploitation of a people by the American Government, you discover how unique and special it is that they are still there. How they have avoided the attempts to change their religion by those of other faiths. How they have refused the good graces of the American Government's attempts to 'normalize' their society. And here they remain, living what the rest of us on the continent wold consider to be a sustenance existence as they have for almost a thousand years.This is an easy-flowing readable social history, and it's well worth the time. Though Waters' book you'll gain an understanding of how these principled people have continued in this area as they have for centuries. I only wish there was a supplement to cover these last few decades as the book was written in the early 1960's, and I can't figure out why he would not include an index. But ... again, well worth the time.
